Texas Solar Incentives

The price of solar panels has decreased dramatically along with an increase in efficiency. These advancements, amazing tax incentives, increased property value, combined with the year-round sunshine in Houston makes it a perfect time to go solar.

Property Tax Exemption

While other states increase property taxes after solar panel installations are completed, Texas does not. This exemption allows home and business owners to save money for years after their solar panel installation and increase their home value without the burden of increase property taxes.

Increase Home Value

Solar panels pay for themselves in a number of ways, one being adding value to your home. Installing a solar panel system on your home can add $3 to $4 per watt of power to your home's value. That means a 5 kilowatt system would increase your home's value by $15,000 or more!

Net Metering

Net metering, or net energy metering (NEM), is a system used by electric utility companies to determine your electric bill based on your net power consumption. In Houston, you can choose your power provider to ensure they offer net metering. On a sunny day, your meter actually runs backward allowing you to sell back excess energy to the grid. If you sell back more than you use in a month, you will get a credit on your bill.

Federal Solar Tax Credit

Regardless of where you live, you are able to take advantage of the best solar incentive. The federal solar tax credit, also known as the investment tax credit (ITC), allows you to deduct 26 percent of the cost of installing a solar energy system from your federal taxes. The ITC applies to both residential and commercial systems, and there is no cap on its value.

Houston Solar Rights Law

Homeowners Associations have been known to put restrictions on solar panels in some states. Requirements such as only being able to place solar panels on certain parts of the roof or not being able to install them at all is a common occurrence. But in Texas, solar panel systems are completely free from such rules. You are able to install any type of solar panel system you like, wherever you like.
